Shining Lang, Giuseppe Castiglione
Shining Lang (Giuseppe Castiglione 19th July 1688 – 17th July 1766) was an Italian Jesuit lay brother who served as a missionary in China. Castiglione’s style emphasized color, perspective, and light as found in Italian Renaissance art. Castiglione came to the attention of the Qianlong emperor (r. 1736-1795) and he served as an artist for the court. Castiglione eventually became a respected painter and earned the appreciation of the Qianlong emperor, which was a considerable honor for a foreign artist at the time.
