Hong Bao’s interest lies in an ancient painting techniques. She engaged in creating mineral paintings and perfected her skills in the research of heavy modern coloured rock.
One Thousand and One Nights depicts a curious unicorn peering through the window of a decadent palace. A blooming tree is growing inside and a magical bird floats through the air above it. The saturated yet dimmed down colours of this composition create a dreamy atmosphere that charms the viewer.

Sweet Secret is a mineral painting. It depicts a fairy floating around teacups, birds, fish and hares. This scenes is reminiscent of the Mad Hatter’s tea party from Alice in Wonderland, as the shy or possibly mischievous fairy looks startled among the delightful chaos. The world is turned upside-down, as the creatures of the sea, land and sky all mingle on one undefined plain.

Wang Xiao Rong likes adventures which is something that pushes her to experiment a lot. Her work is composed by a multitude of materials and mediums. She will use objects such as leaves and papers in her paintings in addition to ink, Chinese painting, and oil pigment, according to her requirements. Thereafter she will often use those materials to create some forms of collages. Each material and colour has an emotional characteristic.
“From a macroscopic perspective, my works examine states of life existence and mourn about how life is short and time vanishes”.
The following piece is a mixed media composition. The first layer holds shades of green which we could interpret as being in the deep waters of the ocean. Wang added some origami shaped boats on the canvas. Some are covered by green layers, some are above, as if a few boats had drowned in the ocean and a few were still surviving.

I’ll Dance for You captures an etherial moment when a fairy dances for a beaming giraffe. As the fairy pirouettes, little fish swim through the sky and flowers shower from the tree, blurring the distinction between the sea and sky. Hong Bao’s mineral pigments perfectly capture the magical atmosphere of this scene and their shimmer rivets us to the fairy’s enchanting dance.

Time Series 1 is a mixed media painting with a very bright and dominant red colour. There is a contrast between the dense red & black area of the piece and the diluted, lighter colours on the left of the painting. There is a definite pattern we can perceive either through the paint brush strokes or the superposition of collage layers.

Slow Dance and a Gentle Song depicts a princely elephant dancing among the various birds and fish. Although he is so much bigger than them, they don’t fear the gentle giant, who peacefully sways above them. The painting creates a sense of tranquility and comfort as the natural world dances in unison.

A characteristic that would normally be associated with humans. The trees are carrying different types of flowers and some them are just floating on the background river. Time’s Up is a mixed media piece composed in majority by a gloomy palette creating a mysterious atmosphere. The bottom half holds the darkest colours, and the top half introduces rays of light into the painting with shades of white and light turquoise. The shapes are quite abstract, yet, you can notice a crowd of people, rectangular shapes in the middle of the piece that could resemble briefcases. It seems the piece reflects on the everyday life routine of going to work. Our brains are switched onto “automatic” and we forget to actually live the present.
