Hong Bao was born in 1984 in the city of Shantou located inside the province of Guangdong, China. She obtained her BFA in 2008 from Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts and proceeded with an MFA, in the same university, that she completed in 2011.

 

Hong Bao’s interest lies in an ancient painting techniques. She engaged in creating mineral paintings and perfected her skills in the research of heavy modern coloured rock.

Send My Love is a delicate woodland scene set in a topsy turvy fairyland. The fish swim through the milky sky while the birds join the deer in a chase on the ground. A mother owl impassively observes this boisterous activity, but her little one seems to be more intrigued, looking like he might descend from the safety of the branch to join the merriment.

    Time Series 1 is a mixed media painting with a very bright and dominant red colour. There is a contrast between the dense red & black area of the piece and the diluted, lighter colours on the left of the painting. There is a definite pattern we can perceive either through the paint brush strokes or the superposition of collage layers.

    This painting is a mixed media piece. The dominance of the yellow and the horizontal lines create an optical illusion in which the painting looks like a 3D piece. The white rectangular shapes in the middle, form a tower coming out of the painting. The yellow shape above displays a sort of empty space,  or hole in a surface. When we think about a state of life, we could imagine a pile of papers on a desk, and the emptiness this every day life, routine represents.

Although he has fluffed up his multicoloured feathers and is resting comfortably, his eyes are fixed on something in the distance and he may fly away at any moment. But for how he is pausing right in front of us, captured with delicacy by Hong Bao.

    This piece is a lovely mixed media composition. The creamy background brings out the uneven rectangular coloured shapes. The mixture of colours is a balance between bright pastel colours and cloudy, hazy, dark colours. But the the general tone is luminous and hopeful, like the period of transition that happens from winter to spring.
