This purse has a design inspired by the work of Artist Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849), the leading ukiyo-e artist and printmaker of the later Edo period. Kitagawa Utamaro (1753 – 1806) was a Japanese artist. He is one of the most highly regarded practitioners of the ukiyo-e genre of woodblock prints, especially for his portraits of beautiful women. This coin purse has a design inspired by Utamaro’s elegant print which shows a young woman holding a tortoise-shell hair-comb over her face whilst appearing to be in a playful mood. Utagawa Kunisada (1786-1865) was one of the three best representatives of the Japanese color woodcut in Edo period. However, among European and American collectors of Japanese prints, beginning in the late 19th and early 20th century, the artist was regarded as rather inferior to the greats of classical ukiyo-e, and therefore as having contributed considerably to the downfall of their art. For this reason, some referred to their works as ‘decadent’.
