Musashi on the Back of Whale, Canvas Tote Bag

This canvas tote bag has a design inspired by the work of Artist Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797-1861), titled Musashi on the Back of Whale. He was one of the last great masters of the Japanese ukiyo-e style of woodblock prints and paintings. He is known for depictions of the battles of legendary samurai heroes. Hence the image of Miyamoto Musashi plunging his sword into a giant whale. His artwork incorporates aspects of Western representation in landscape painting and caricature.

The design features vintage Song dynasty (960-1279) master art of “Bird Attracted to Ripe Fruit” by Academy painter Lin Chun. This work “Bird Attracted to Ripe Fruit” shows a sand sparrow standing on a Chinese pear-leaved crabapple branch with its head raised, calling for its peers to share the ripe fruit. The painter uses extremely fine strokes to portray the feathers of the sand sparrow, and running ink repeatedly to strengthen the sense of cluster and texture.
