Kitagawa Utamaro (1753 – 1806) was a Japanese artist. He is one of the most highly regarded practitioners of the ukiyo-e genre of woodblock prints, especially for his portraits of beautiful women. This Coin purse has a design inspired by Utagawa’s woodcut print produced in 1798 which show a head-and-shoulders portrait of a beautiful young woman wiping her face. This purse has a design inspired by the work of Artist Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849), the leading ukiyo-e artist and printmaker of the later Edo period. Utagawa Kunisada (1786-1865) was one of the three best representatives of the Japanese color woodcut in Edo period. However, among European and American collectors of Japanese prints, beginning in the late 19th and early 20th century, the artist was regarded as rather inferior to the greats of classical ukiyo-e, and therefore as having contributed considerably to the downfall of their art. For this reason, some referred to their works as ‘decadent’.
