£1,300.00Availability: In stockOut of stock
Wang Xiao Rong likes adventures which is something that pushes her to experiment a lot. Her work is composed by a multitude of materials and mediums. She will create with objects in her paintings such as leaves and papers, in addition to ink, oil pigment and the Chinese painting technique according to her requirements. Thereafter, Wang will often use those materials to create some forms of collages. Each material and colour has an emotional characteristic.
Time’s Up is a mixed media piece composed in majority by a gloomy palette creating a mysterious atmosphere. The bottom half holds the darkest colours, and the top half introduces rays of light into the painting with shades of white and light turquoise. The shapes are quite abstract, yet, you can notice a crowd of people, rectangular shapes in the middle of the piece that could resemble briefcases. It seems the piece reflects on the everyday life routine of going to work. Our brains are switched onto “automatic” and we forget to actually live the present.

“From a macroscopic perspective, my works examine states of life existence and mourn about how life is short and time vanishes”.
This painting is a mixed media piece. The dominance of the yellow and the horizontal lines create an optical illusion in which the painting looks like a 3D piece. The white rectangular shapes in the middle, form a tower coming out of the painting. The yellow shape above displays a sort of empty space, or hole in a surface. When we think about a state of life, we could imagine a pile of papers on a desk, and the emptiness this every day life, routine represents.

Time Series 4 is an abstract mixed media piece. The painting looks like a mixture of dripping technique and collage. The artwork holds a creamy background and uneven black lines. The composition looks like lost fragments of a puzzle connected together to create its own free-form, leaving slight spaces between them.

This piece is a lovely mixed media composition. The creamy background brings out the uneven rectangular coloured shapes. The mixture of colours is a balance between bright pastel colours and cloudy, hazy, dark colours. But the the general tone is luminous and hopeful, like the period of transition that happens from winter to spring.

The following piece is considerably dense. First of all in terms of colours and how filled the canvas is, but also, in the variety of painting mediums. The lower half of the piece is opaque and diluted whereas the upper half is saturated in pigments.
Even though the painting appears to be abstract, we can distinguish shapes that reminds us of waves from the sea, maybe clouds at the top and a horizon in the middle. In the middle of the work, we can catch a glimpse of a simple dark touch resembling a boat vanishing in the intensity of a disturbed sea.
Wang allows a space in her works for the audience’s own interpretations and emotions. She has a very loving and peaceful nature, yearning for good and looking towards the future which is depicted into her art. The works very much talk about romance, sincerity, amiability and nature.

Sail, is one of the few pieces from Wang where figurative and abstract meet. She created a lovely smokey and abstract sea, behind a body of origami-like shaped boats. Some of the boats are clearer than others depending on the colour and placement in the work. We can’t quite figure if all the boats are supposedly in the the see or the shore which adds another abstract and mysterious layer to the narration of the painting.

Time Series 1 is a mixed media painting with a very bright and dominant red colour. There is a contrast between the dense red & black area of the piece and the diluted, lighter colours on the left of the painting. There is a definite pattern we can perceive either through the paint brush strokes or the superposition of collage layers.

The following piece is a mixed media composition. The first layer holds shades of green which we could interpret as being in the deep waters of the ocean. Wang added some origami shaped boats on the canvas. Some are covered by green layers, some are above, as if a few boats had drowned in the ocean and a few were still surviving.

“I wish I was like the Petit Prince. I want to be naive. In the book, he paints a snake that swallows an elephant but the adults have a different interpretation; they think it’s a hat and the Little Prince says the adult world is too complicated. The world is definitely not flawless, you can see famine, war and disaster, but I want to view it in a simplified way”. — Artist Shen Jing Dong interviewed by Fionnuala McHugh

The icon that Shen Jingdong’s “hero” series created, is an image of the soldiers without any personal identity. This image is hardly to tell who the specific soldier is. His facial features are vague, and in fact he is a man in common sense. The clothing and attitude in-which he stands, his identity and individuality are replaced by a common ideology.
The image of the soldier which was named hero is out of refinement. They are created into four kinds of people, which are the red, the yellow, the bald and the soldiers with hat. The yellow soldiers possess a hue of humanity, and the red soldiers stand for the solemn atmosphere of revolution. Their bodies are not only dressed in the uniform dress, but also have a fixed correct upright posture. This kind of image comes from his experience in the army. Almost every soldier with an “out of the box”personality will be uniformed in the end after joining the army.
Angel shows a girl dancing in an army tutu. The girl is wearing a pair of wings over her outfit and her movements seems like they have been repeated a huge amount of times judging by how straight they are. The wings play a contrast with the tutu as she is still a little girl, who should be free, but she is detained by her movements that are in control of others.

In Sh!, a green person is looking straight at the viewer with his index finger over his lips. Red nose, white rounded background, and a bandaid over the neck and head. The figure is smiling, but somehow, it puts the viewer in an uncomfortable position as if we had seen something and now had to keep it secret.
